Billy X. Curmano is a Minnesota artist and a long-time environmentalist. He has gone to physical extremes to champion the environment and call attention to climate change. For example, Curmano spent two months of each summer over a ten-year period to swim the entire length of the Mississippi River, dramatizing the ecological damage to “Ol’ Man River.” To say the least, Curmano did not go unscathed in the often-dangerous waters. Along the way he would stop and rest with his safety and camera crews, explaining to flabbergasted by-standers along the shores why he was doing what he was doing and hearing from others about the changes they had seen in the river over time.
